Deep-Web search specialist expands, renames
A search start-up called Infovell has renamed itself DeepDyve, begun offering a free "deep Web" search tool, and expanded its search technology to the domains of computing, clean tech, and energy.
DeepDyve is designed to reach areas of the Internet not indexed by Google, Yahoo, and other major search engines, the company said. The company has indexed 500 million pages so far and hopes to expand to 1 billion by the end of the year.

Whrrl's geo-social network comes to the iPhone
Location-based social network Whrrl has a new application for iPhone users called Whrrl 2.0. It lets you post photos and status updates that are tied to a geographical location. It includes integration with Facebook Connect and Twitter, meaning you can sign up and use the service with your Facebook credentials, and have your location updates and status updates from Whrrl cross-posted to both your social-networking profile and Twitter page.
FriendFeed launches AIR-powered desktop notifier
FriendFeed has a new way for users to keep track of conversations in real time, and it may be the first thing the company has done that I just plain don't like. It runs in Adobe AIR and pops up with small notifications every time there's activity on your home feed or a selected friends list.
